Event Description:
5 local entrepreneurs will defend their Business' product/service in an attempt to be the one out of the 5 that students choose not to "throw" out of the balloon. In the run up to the balloon debate, students study case material regarding each particpating entrepreneur's product or service. All entrpreneurs are local, sourced through Business Education South Yorkshire.

Event Name: BIG - Planning for Success (Calculating Prices & Overheads / Sales Forecasting)

Event Description:
This is a full day workshop which encourages participants to consider the prices they will charge for their products/services. Explores different types of costs, direct costs/capital costs and overheads and how to determine these costs in the business plan. Participants will use part of the session to put together price lists and costs for a range of their products, estimate how much money they will need to start the business and draw up a list of overheads for their first year in business. The afternoon session will build on the work completed in the morning session and it will teach participants how to put together a “sales forecast” for their first year in business based on the costs which they have calculated in the morning session. We will also explore “break-even analysis” and will encourage participants to consider the viability of their venture from the calculations that they have carried out. Looks at “Business status” ie. whether to be a Sole trader/Partnership or LTD Company and the legal requirements/registration for each of these. Considers the business name and corporate identity issues. Participants will be encouraged to start work on their business plan and to put together a survival budget for the next meeting. The second part of the workshop explores Market Research and why it is so important to research the market before starting the business. Different types of research are explored. Participants are encouraged to carry out research on their target customers and competition and to consider the strengths and weaknesses of their competitors in order to consider how their product/service will compete.
