Youth Enterprise Society (YES) clubs at secondary schools
Posted by: Arie_Ewetian
Uploaded by:EWET - Education With Enterprise Trust
Event Description:
Combating youth unemployment through pro-active enterprise development at secondary school level with the Youth Enterprise Society (YES) as the vehicle. Currently, we have 300 clubs that involve 12 000 learners nationally throughout the year. This represents around 5% of rural schools. An external impact assessment report produced in 2008 is available and found the YES model to be highly effective in the attainment of entrepreneurship education amongst learners, teachers and within the communities where it functions. Given this proven effectiveness, YES as a not-for-profit vehicle is available to you the reader - to make enterprise development happen preferably in rural areas where poverty and unemployment is at its worst. We need people to champion YES through active promotion. Once we receive inquiries from successful promotion, we verify that the community to be serviced demonstrate a demand for YES and that they are prepared to champion implementation and will sustain the drive. Training is then offered together with all of the required resource materials. Trained volunteers (teachers) support the learners (YES members) with the functioning of the clubs throughout the year. The Nelson Mandela Children's Foundation and Umsobumvu Youth Fund were the core investor for 2008 that ensured substantial delivery in the Free State and Mpumalanga. We need social investment to sustain existing YES clubs within the other 7 provinces as well as to grow the movement. A national YES youth executive who represent all 9 provinces is in place to assist. The highlight of 2008 was the YES Simama Ranta 2008 competition that ended on 2 October with pictures that could be viewed at http://picasaweb.google.com/ArieEwetian The next national YES Simama Ranta will be held within 2010 and we really want to make it special for these young people. Other areas that will be helpful is to provide access to business opportunities or for further learning for "graduates" of YES - YES Alumni.
