Entrepreneur by Accident?– Advice from Dr. Reid
“Teenagers are hardwired differently, they want to make a difference and care about the world and their community. They have something unique to offer and they have it now,” said Dr. Susan L. Reid, author, entrepreneur, and business coach during a recent interview about her new book, Discovering Your Inner Samurai: The Entrepreneurial Woman’s Journey to Business Success. She explained that we, as teenagers and young adults, have a sense of ourselves as unique individuals– we are Millennials, a group of youth who value our uniqueness and ability to contribute to and fix the world.
Her book, which offers cogent and inspirational advice for women who are engaging in their first entrepreneurial adventure, is also applicable to youth. It describes the manner in which we become entrepreneurs be accident, or in her terms- accidental preneurs. Sometimes major life changes force us to re-evaluate our career situations, in doing so, we realize that our destiny lies in entrepreneurship. This can happen as frequently with young adults as with older women.
What then are the three key pieces of advice we need to follow, as we walk down this entrepreneurial path? Dr. Reid offers this:
1.) Know who you are
2.) Accept yourself as you are
3.) Dare to be who you are– why not?
The third piece of advice I like the best because it allows us to take chances and be a little risky. Even if what you dare to do doesn’t work out, it’s better than not doing it! The worst thing that can happen is that we can fail but the best thing that can happen is that we will find our selves, find something amazing, and make a real difference in the world.
Dr. Reid is hoping to inspire entrepreneurs, to help them down their entrepreneurial path and to create a ripple effect where the spirit of entrepreneurship creates larger and large rings. I’m glad to be a ring in her ripple, and I suggest you check out her book too. It’s inspirational especially for women but we can all find a lesson inside!
