Why your college degree means nothing

college.jpgIn reality, your college degree may mean something. This was just better than than the “why I am a failure” title with which I had originally started. As we all become more educated, our BAs are going to mean less and less. In the future, my MA, will be considered the norm. However, there may be a way to stand out of the crowd or at less to become less reliant on others.

A recent report, by the Kauffman Foundation, and an article, in the New York Times, have shown that more and more universities are teaching entrepreneurship either as its own topic or in conjunction with others. There are now well over 2,000 US schools who are actively aware of and engaging in the concept of entrepreneurship, almost eight times as many as there were in the mid 1980s.

What does this mean? It means that people are starting to invest in their own skills and their own ability to succeed. Rather than earn degrees where they will be making money for others, they are learning to invest in themselves and their skills. For those of you who are currently enrolled in college, there are a lot of options: Northeastern offers a variety of co-ops relating to entrepreneurship; Northwestern has a Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation; Florida International University runs a Global Entrepreneurship Center. While, these are just a few scattered examples, the point is these schools are educating you to be an entrepreneur. Take advantage so that you ending being one of the entrepreneurs we highlight, instead of the person who is doing the highlighting.
