The Sounds of Entrepreneurship
When asked what’s an entrepreneur most people would say a small business owner or a web developer. But entrepreneurship can be found in many different walks of life. Your friend that makes screen print t-shirts is an entrepreneur. Your neighbor that collects honey and sells it at the local grocery store is an enttpreneur. Or even your college friends that started their own band and are touring the country in their parent’s van. Music is becoming a large part of the world of entrepreneurship. From making music, to marketing music, to producing music.
Major universities are taking notice and teaching about entrepreneurship in music, and not just in the music school. Colorado State University is offering its economics majors a chance to learn the ins and outs of the music industry. Other schools like the University of Miami and New York University are teaching their students about music entrepreneurship. Students at the Univeristy of Miami even have the opportunity to take part in the student run record label ‘Cane Records.
It isn’t just the schools that are capitalizing on people’s love of music and desire to make a living around that passion. Major music festivals are becoming a hotbed for getting into the music biz. Events like SXSW bring everyone interested in music to Austin, Texas to enjoy some great music and to learn about the music industry. SXSW is not just a place for up-and-coming bands to show off their talent but it is also a place for music bloggers, record labels and even the web moguls to schmooze and network with everyone interested in the music industry.
If you have a love for music, playing, listening or just talking about it there is a place for everyone. One doesn’t need to have the business savy to start their own label or the talent to play in a band to capitalize on their love of music. Websites and blogs like Stereogum, Pitchfork, Brooklyn Vegan, and Largehearted Boy have had a substantial impact on the music world and all they do is listen to the music and then write about it later.
There are opportunities for every person to take what they have a passion about. Music, fashion, film, or art if you love to do it you can make something out of it.
