Cause the Chicks Dig It

Monday, March 31st, 2008

women2.jpg“‘Cause the chicks dig it” is the refrain to my little sister’s favorite country song. It is also the refrain that keeps popping into my head when reading about women’s entrepreneurship. There are a multitude of women out there who regardless of their ethnicity, talent, predilections or language just enjoy being entrepreneurs.

Community Green

nuestras.jpgSo you have a town whose major industry has closed, a large immigrant population and high unemployment rates….. obviously you would suggest that they start a garden. As unorthodox as this sounds, it is exactly what Seth Williams, an undergraduate at Hampshire College proposed. The result has been a thriving community farming business, new businesses, a ways to involve youth as small business owners and a real sense of community ownership.

Global Entrepreneurship Week Presents: Mark Bao

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

So, we thought it would be fun to interview young entrepreneurs to find out what its like to, well,… be an entrepreneur. We all know the stories about their businesses but we know less about their lives and what attracts them to be entrepreneurs. So, we have decided to send out a cosmo/glamour celebrity like survey to interesting entrepreneurs so that we can compare and contrast them and their personalities. By using simple questions, we aim to provide a fast, vivid “picture” of a variety of people who fall into the entrepreneur category.

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

The New York Times published this article with Mr. Corbell, the author of a column called “The Biz Coach” that appears on the Web sites of an all-news radio and television station in Seattle. I thought it was so good I should reprint it his tip sheet…

To both fledgling entrepreneurs, Mr. Corbell has drawn up a tip sheet for increasing their online exposure. These are his main points:

You weren’t meant to have a boss, argues Paul Graham. Well, actually Paul, I wasn’t meant to work- I was created to spend my life in leisure, enjoying the better things in life, traveling, meeting fascinating people…….. Oh wait, no, that’s my fantasy projection of myself…

Celebrentrepreneurs

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Lauren ConradTwo of this last centuries great entrepreneurs, Henry Ford and Michael Dell, became the great entrepreneurs they are simply on one idea. That idea wasn’t an invention or some new product. The automobile and the computer had already been invented. Ford and Dell became entrepreneurs because of their innovative ways to sell an already produced product. Ford took the automobile and mass produced it and made the car available to the masses. And Dell took the computer and changed the way people got their computers by producing them made to order. Sometimes all a great entrepreneur needs is a new way of selling things.

If I was part of a major criminal cartel and making tons of cash, I might have a hard time giving that up to silkscreen. Or to bake. Well, no I love baking, if someone paid me to bake I’d be there in heartbeat……..

At the Cross of Politics and Technology

Friday, March 21st, 2008

This is cool. A Stanford professor, Larry Lessing, has created a “wikipedia” of sorts to follow politicians. This will be a place for voters to post a congressman and his position on events. People can then follow the events and update the position of the candidate. The point is to make sure that the promises politicians make are followed through on- its an interesting concept and increases the usability of the wikipedia model. I wonder how else we can use this technology to the benefit of greater society and if we can increase its profitability thus making it a true entrepreneurial venture.

Society and Innovation

triangle12entreinnovation.jpgA recent article, in the Economist, compared London and Paris on a variety of fronts. What struck me as the most interesting was the comparison made between the two countries regarding their societal focuses. Paris, it seems, is focused on preserving the past and does so through the restoration of old buildings, preservation of artifacts, etc. London, on the other hand, was shown as a society who is innovative because the article argued there was less to preserve- no gastronomic tradition, per se, no noteworthy skyline, etc. The article then raised a question that I wish to take up in further detail: “How can you create a desire to innovate when the ambient culture is oriented towards preservation?”
