No More Sundance??

From Here to AwesomeI have no idea what goes into the making of a film; although, I’m sure it requires exorbitant amounts of time and energy. Naively, I thought once all that effort was put into the film, people would just buy it and then the film-maker would receive bundles of money. Unfortunately, it appears that that is not the case- filmmakers don’t receive bundles (ever) and movies aren’t just bought……

When finding videos for our new Global Entrepreneurship Week YouTube Channel (c’mon be a subscriber, we just started it!), I stumbled upon a contest for film-makers called From Here to Awesome (even the name sounds cool). In browsing their site, I learned that 20,000 movies were made in 2008; yet, only 2 % are ever screened at film festivals.

So the founders of FHE have revolutionized an innovative new way to do film festivals online while increasing the distribution and potential pay return of films. “FHTA attempts to create multiple revenue opportunities for the festival filmmakers by providing a platform that enables distribution across multiple outlets - mobile, online, living rooms and theaters.” Furthermore, it allows filmmakers to retain their rights and price their films as they choose.

I think it may revolutionize the way filmmakers produce film but it also might just be a different way of running film festivals with the end result being that only 2% of those films submitted to the site are played, distributed and profited from. What do you think? Is this going to be a successful new entrepreneurial venture? Or is it just more wasted time and energy?

What will celebs do if everything transitions online? No red carpet! Oh no!
