The Confusing World of Social Media
I respect Mark Zuckerberg, the guy who created facebook, for a lot of reasons but mostly because he wanted to connect people online- a simple vision, and from it made a $2 billion dollar company.
Simplicity is at the heart of entrepreneurship. We see simple solutions to every day problems and from there can potentially make a lot of money. However, I can also think of hundreds of examples were people lost big money because their “simple” solution wasn’t simple in the least.
This lack of simplicity is increasingly evident in various social media platforms. Even the sheer amount of variety is a complication. We at the Week have been attempting to permeate a variety of social media because we think it is important for you to be able to contact us, contact our connections and discuss the initiative on whatever platform works for you. But in creating these groups, I feel that some are doomed to failure, others to never even achieving recognition. Do you remember when there used to be 15 different search engines to choose from (Lycos anyone??)? Now does anyone use anything but Google?
Eventually, I foresee people conversing on only 3 or 4 major social networking platforms. As such, we are targeting our work to a few major networks at the start. I would like to, formally, encourage you to join:
- our Facebook group
- our LinkedIn group
- our MySpace page
- and don’t forget our newsletter: www.unleashingideas.org/newsletter
On the other hand, I encourage you to be the person who creates the “Google” of social media. Oh, and I’d like ten percent of the profits for sparking the idea.
